About the Centre

Bhakti Marga UK was inaugurated in April 2007 by Sri Swami Vishwananda. It is situated in Feltham, near Heathrow in West London. It is a small centre dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu who came to save his young devotee Prahalad from the demon King Hiranyakashipu. Swami Vishwananda, whilst inaugurating the centre, said that the murthi was set up in London to remove the negativity present in the surrounding area and city.

The Murthi of Lord Narasimha is made of granite and is 4½ feet tall. Lord Vishnu’s consort Goddess Luxmi is also seen sitting on Lord Narasimha’s lap. The Murthi was named by Swami Vishwananda as ‘Bhakti-Luxmi-Narasimha’.

Presently, the residents of the centre are Brahmacharis, who follow an Ashram style routine with regular prayers every day. The centre is open to the public on Saturdays at 4:45 p.m. for weekly abishekham (bathing ritual) of Lord Bhakti-Luxmi-Narasimha, and on Purnima (full moon days). Please see the calendar or news pages for the latest information on events at the centre, and elsewhere in London and the UK.

Photographs of the centre and events that have taken place there can be viewed in the gallery.

As well as the temple, to the rear there is also a chapel in the Greek orthodox tradition with icons and a relic of St Hermolaus. There is also a garden based on a theme of Vrindavan and Vaikunta.

About the Bhakti Marga Order and Brahmacharis

In 2005, under the guidance of Sri Swami Vishwananda, a Brahmachari community called Bhakti Marga was founded which embraces both Hindu and Christian tenets. The community is orientated to the teachings of Holy scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible and other timeless teachings of various Sages and Saints. Brahmachari is a Sanskrit word which means to surrender completely to God and to make him the centre of ones life. Those who choose such a way of life strive, similarly to monks and nuns, for a life of both simplicity and chastity. To detach oneself of worldly needs shouldn't be an end in itself, but a means to experience joy within the heart and to take on one's duties in life together with God.

Brahmacharis Performing Abishekham

The Brahmacharis (monks) and Brahmacharinis (nuns) of Bhakti Marga vary greatly in age, culture, origin and background. Some live in a monastic community with regular daily routines and prayers, in which they undertake certain tasks according to their talents and abilities, and others work outside. God always forms the centre of community life, and during prayer times all work stops.

Those who don't live in the community work in their professions and fulfil their individual duties. For them too however, prayer and spiritual practice form a central part of their lives. Within their own means, they commit themselves to the work of Swami Vishwananda and to the wider community.

About Bhakti Kriya

Recently, Sri Swami Vishwananda began to teach the powerful and scientific technique of Bhakti Kriya, as taught by his Guru, Mahavatar Kriya Babaji. This incredible practice has a powerful effect in accelerating the spiritual evolution of the dedicated practitioner by drawing the life force away from the senses, and thus the distractions of the material world, and into the higher centres in the spine and brain. In time, one finds that it is possible to withdraw the life force at will in order to concentrate fully on the divine presence within. Swamiji says, "The higher consciousness that you have deep inside you can be revealed when your mind is centred on God."

Bhakti Kriya provides one with effective tools with which to work independently towards self-realisation. Swami Vishwananda is clear that he does not wish for people to become dependent upon him. He wants people to trust God and the Guru (teacher) within their own self. "To realise the deep connection with God within oneself, we must practice Bhakti [devotion]. When you surrender yourself wholeheartedly and say, "God I want You. Reveal Yourself to me!" then God will reveal Himself. He cannot say "No" to you because your own Self cannot hide from yourself."

About Seva (Selfless Service)

Medical Camp December 2007

In December 2007, Bhakti Marga volunteers went to help treat patients in Kolkata in association with the Ramakrishna Vedanta Ashram.

Due to the fact that there is large-scale migration into Kolkata by people hoping for a better life, many people actually find themselves living in very poor conditions and extreme poverty. The sheer volume of people compromises the ability of the city to meet their basic needs and they often end up residing in inhumane slums.

Women in urban slums work outside their homes in factories, shops or as unskilled labourers or domestic servants. As a result, those with families are unable to provide proper care which is essential for the physical and mental development of their children.

Almost half of the children under three years of age (47%) are underweight and a similar percentage (46%) are stunted.

The Volunteer team was made up of general practitioners, gynaecologists, nurses, an orthopaedic surgeon and acupuncturists. In addition, there were also general volunteers who helped to support the work of the medical team. Help was given in a two-fold way. The first aim was to provide the highest medical care possible given the restrictions on equipment, time and geographical area. Free medication was given to all those diagnosed with curable conditions. The second aim was to provide education on healthy infant feeding practices, nutritional advice and supplements, as well as food hygiene. Nutritional food and clean drinking water were also provided during the course of the camp.

Helping the Homeless

Each Saturday, a group of Bhakti Marga volunteers take warm blankets & clothing, hot drinks and food to the homeless in central London. This programme has now been running for three years.

This is carried out because we know that:

Currently we are looking for more volunteers to help us with this valuable and selfless service, particularly over the winter months. If you would like to assist in any way, or can spare just a few hours early on Saturday mornings to come along, please email Sabrina on s_mandil@hotmail.com to find out how you can help.

Christmas Programme

Christmas Carols
This is an annual programme that is conducted by volunteers of the Bhakti Marga Order during the Christmas season, whereby a group of volunteers visit the old and infirm to bring some Christmas cheer to them.

Many elderly people lead a life of isolation, and visitors help ease their loneliness. This year a group of volunteers went to a residential home for the aged that provides care for 40 people. The group sang Christmas carols with the residents, and spent time afterwards chatting with them. Refreshments were served and everyone had a merry time.

If you would like to make a donation to Bhakti Marga, to assist with our charitable and many other good works, please click here. Many thanks.
